In collaboration with Ergo (Abby O.), we will need to discuss where to mount the dash, determine housing size constraints, and control mechanisms. This will determine what the User Experience and User Interface for the dash.

Some potential Control mechanisms:

Digital Rotary Encoder Module

  • The user scrolls to a menu selection with the dial, and clicks on the dial to select the menu option

Pros:

  • Simple - one dial controls the entire dash
  • Durable
  • Can be controlled with limited dexterity (gloved hands)

Cons:

  • Limited menu selection - the user must scroll through numerous options before arriving at the one they want
  • Not accessible from the steering wheel (could be done, but I am picturing the dial to be right beside the display - integrated in the dash housing)

5 button keypad

  • Either integrated in the dash housing or into the steering wheel, intuitive usage

Pros:

  • Intuitive
  • Faster navigation
  • Integrate into steering wheel - can be controlled with a gloved thumb

Cons:

  • More difficult to build (take five push buttons, 3d print keys for each, solder buttons to perfboard, build a housing for the entire control, then assemble)
  • Software integration may be slightly more difficult

Touch Screen on Display

  • We won't be doing this because using the touch display with a bare finger does not reliably control the display. Will not work with a gloved finger
